Character Commitment, Community

The following code of conduct was created by the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation and modified by the Journeyman Board of Directors to fit the purpose of our organization.

Please download a copy. You must sign and present this document when signing up your child for Journeyman of J-Hawk Basketball.

Parent Code of Conduct

The essential elements of character building and ethics in sports are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship and six core principles:

TRUSTWORTHINESS — RESPECT — RESPONSIBILITY — FAIRNESS — CARING — GOOD CITIZENSHIP

The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects these "six pillars of character."

Expectation of the Parent(s)

As a parent or spectator:

  1. I will not force my child to participate in sports. Those forced to participate will not truly give what is expected of a Journeyman.
  2. I will remember that my child is participating to have fun and learn fundamentals and that the game is for our youth involved.
  3. I will inform the coach of any physical disability or ailment that may affect the safety of my child or the safety of others.
  4. I will trust those that understand the rules of the game and the policies of the league.
  5. I (and my guests) will be a positive role model for my child and encourage sportsmanship by showing respect and courtesy, and by demonstrating positive support for all players, coaches, officials and spectators at every game, practice or other sporting event.
  6. I (and my guests) will not engage in any kind of unsportsmanlike conduct with any official, coach, player, or parent such as booing and taunting; refusing to shake hands; or using profane language or gestures.
  7. I will not encourage any behaviors or practices that would endanger the health and well-being of the athletes.
  8. I will teach my child to play by the rules and to resolve conflicts without resorting to hostility or violence or verbal bashing of those involved to other spectators.
  9. I will demand that my child treat other players, coaches, officials and spectators with respect regardless of race, creed, color, sex or ability.
  10. I will teach my child that doing one's best is more important than winning, so that my child will never feel defeated by the outcome of a game or his/her performance.
  11. I will praise my child for competing fairly and applying solid work ethic — effort not outcome.
  12. I will never ridicule my child or any other participant for making a mistake or losing a competition.
  13. I will emphasize skill development and practices and how they benefit my child over winning.
  14. I will promote the emotional and physical well-being of the athletes ahead of any personal desire I may have for my child to win.
  15. I will respect the officials and their authority during games and will never question, discuss, or confront coaches at the gym, and will take time to speak with coaches at an agreed upon time and place. It has also been established that while discussing an issue with a Journeyman Staff member that you allow us to have another staff member present. You may do the same.
  16. I will demand a sports environment for my child that is free from drugs, tobacco, and alcohol and I will refrain from their use at all sports events.
  17. I will refrain from yelling, screaming or coaching my child or other players during games and practices.
  18. I will counsel my child on the importance of these issues and if disrespectful behavior is reported to me by Journeyman representatives I will explain that failure to correct such an attitude may result in disciplinary action.

Addressing Concerns

As a parent of a young basketball player, it's your job to foster a positive environment for your child. That takes discipline on your part. We are asking you to be the respectable role model for your child and the entire Journeyman family.

If you find you have a concern regarding your child or another aspect of the organization, we ask that you follow the guidelines below.

  1. First ask yourself, have you given your child the time to resolve any problems they are having on their own?
  2. If after a reasonable amount of time, you feel the problem has not been resolved than we ask that you consult the coach in a spirit of cooperation — NOT confrontation.
  3. Discussing the problem should not be done in the middle of a game or in the presents of other players or parents. We ask that you talk in person or e-mail a board member so that the conversation is done in a confidential manner. This will alleviate any embarrassment to the player or parent.
  4. Issues should be brought up in a calm and private conversation with the coach and/or to any member of the Journeyman executive board.

Disciplinary Action Process

(for parent and player)

Alleged violations of the code of conduct noted above and stated in the Journeyman Players Association Contract can be reported by anyone, verbally or in writing to any board member. The following steps will take place if a violation has been reported:

  1. The president of Journeyman Basketball Organization shall investigate any complaints made.
  2. The findings will be reviewed with the executive board.
  3. The executive board will discuss the issue and determine if any action should be taken.
  4. If the board votes that disciplinary action is warranted, then the participant/parent shall be notified.
  5. The participant has the right to request a hearing. Such a request must be made in writing and handled calmly and respectfully.
  6. The board will make the final decision.

Disciplinary Guidelines

Any violations of the Journeyman Code of Conduct standards and/or JPA Contract will result in disciplinary action. Based on the severity of the incident, the following actions could result and will be determined at the sole discretion, of the executive board.

a. Warning
b. Ejection from game/asked to leave the gym
c. Game suspensions/Not allowed on property during Journeyman function
d. Season suspension
e. 1 year suspension from association
f. Expulsion from Journeyman Organization indefinitely

I have read, understand, and agree to follow the conditions of the above stated Code of Conduct Policy. I recognize that I am responsible for all of my guests at a Journeyman activity and I am also aware of my responsibilities as a parent, to instill a positive example for my son/daughter. Furthermore I understand that failure to follow these simple guidelines may result in a Board decision to remove me and/or my child from the program.

(Failure to sign the document will not exclude parents from following Journeyman parental code of conduct)
