Q: My Child has never been a Journeyman. How do we get started?
A: To ensure that you get all communications in regards to Journeyman events such as, clinics, camps, sessions and fundraisers you need to sign up online. From the homepage of the site go to "Shop at Journeyman Basketball" then "Receive Communication (Join Netwrk)" then click on "Journeyman Announcements & Session Info". Fill out the appropriate information and submit. It's free. That's it. Now you will get all information needed to sign up when there is a session schedule. Keep in mind that if you change your e-mail address without notifying us, then you will fail to received the information you requested. Journeyman has a large network of volunteers but not large enough to call people regarding every event. Journeyman communicates with over 500 families on a regular basis via e-mail.

Q: When does my son play?
A: If your son is placed in Division2 he will meet on Thursday evenings 5:30pm to 8:00pm, Saturdays from 4:00pm to 6:00pm and Sunday start times varying from 1:30pm to 5:00pm. Since Division2 juggles 3 or 4 teams, your son will not meet all three days but most likely to meet once or twice a week.

If your son is placed in Division1 he will meet on Tuesday evenings 5:30pm to 8:00pm, Saturdays from 4:00pm to 6:00pm or 6:00pm to 8:00pm and Sunday start times varying from 1:30pm to 5:00pm. Since Division1 juggles 4 or 5 teams, your son will not meet all three days but most likely to meet once or twice a week.

If your son is placed in the Senior Division he will meet on an occasional Wednesday evening from 6:30pm to 8:30pm Friday evenings 6:30pm to 8:30pm, rare Saturdays from 6:00pm to 8:00pm and Sundays from 5:00pm to 6:45pm or 6:45pm to 8:30pm. Since the Senior Division juggles 3 or 4 teams, your son will not meet all three days but most likely to meet once or twice a week.

Special Note
If your assigned division is meeting on any evening you may attend and work through our drills and instruction during the practice section of the evening, you will not be able to participate in the game portion unless your team is playing.

Q: What is the age limit for the program?
A: 17 years 6 months. (17-1/2) In the beginning of a posted session there is a “born on or after date” posted. It is reflective of our age limit. Also understand that those Journeyman over the age of 17 must commit to a minimum of 8 games before they sign up.

Q: Where does my registration fee go?
A: Journeyman Basketball strives to keep our fees for families to a minimum, while at the same time, ensuring a quality experience for every player. Registration fees cover our gym costs (while the Church on Rt. 88 generously donates gym time to us every Tuesday and Thursday, we do have to pay SAU16 an hourly and daily rate for the school gyms), insurance, equipment, officials, website and software fees (store), and uniform replacement/repair. There are many other small costs but these are the major ones. Only JP, Charlie and Kelsey receive a salary from the organization. Also a few staff members receive a small stipend for some of the extra work they do that supports the organization, dependant upon board approval.

Q: Why does my son have to pay dues, on top of the registration fee?
A: Players are asked to pay $5 in dues to the Journeyman Players' Association every session that they play. The JPA, which is facilitated by a player designated by the Board of Directors, is responsible for collecting the dues and then allocating them to various local charities or causes. The JPA solicits votes from the players (all divisions) and then sees to it that the donations are made within that session's timeframe. To date, under the current President's tenure, the Journeyman Players' Association has donated $2350 to local organizations. Please refer to the Players' Association page on our website for details. Journeyman Basketball strives to teach our players not only basketball skills but LIFE skills. Giving back to the local community that has done so much to support us is one way for the players to adhere to the organization's motto, Character-Commitment-Community.

Q: How does my son return to Journeyman after skipping a session?
A: Commitment…. He must remain committed to the organization. He can do this by simply checking out the site during his break from the team. At the end of a session we have an awards ceremony which is posted on the site. This awards ceremony follows our championship games. From the date of this ceremony your Journeyman has two weeks (14 days) to contact us by e-mail with his intent to play accompanied by the approval of a parent. Considering the growth of the program we recommend that they sign up the night of the awards ceremony by showing up to support their teammates and friends. After this two week period we contact those from the waiting list. There are also e-mail reminders sent about signing up for upcomming session. Please watch fro such reminders.

Q: My son has never participated in a Journeyman Session but wants to participate in camps. Can he do that?
A: Yes. Our camps are open to all interested on a first come first serve basis. We do recommend you take these opportunities to get a feel for the program and see if it is what you are looking for. Simple remember to pay attention to e-mails sent from our online software regarding such events.

Q: What determines the divisional placement of my son?
A: Ability, age, commitment, communication and confidence. Journeyman believes that confidence is a huge factor in your young athletes development. Moving up simply because of a player’s age is not acceptable to the program guidelines. He must be able to adapt to the surroundings of the more advanced group while not impeding the progress of that group. Player’s that feel they are ready should approach the head coach and verbally express these interests. We realize that this is hard for a lot of younger players, however we are trying to teach them to speak for themselves. This communication is not mandatory in order to advance, it’s simply encouraged. Coaches make these decisions with two main factors in mind…. Your player’s ability and the room in the division your son wishes to advance to. Often a player is ready to advance but there is no room in the next division. Once a player advances to the next division he can not return to the lower division. Again confidence is key.

Q: My son’s team has lost the first three games of the season and there is another team that is dominantly winning games. Why hasn’t there been a trade?
A: Rest assured that the head coaches know what the teams records are. A win or a loss does not always reflect a team’s ability. Trades are not made due to attendance issues. This means we will not make a trade because one of the team’s best scorers never shows up. Commitment! Also, understand that the coaches have great lines of communication. If they believe their team is not playing to their full potential, they want the opportunity to get that potential out of them. Adding a better scorer or rebounder to their team can often send the wrong message…. If you’re losing we’ll bail you out. We use different forms of motivation to revitalize a team. Give us the opportunity to make them proud of themselves.

Q: My son missed a game because of a family priority. Why did he serve a half game suspension?
A: Communication. Simply telling a team member what is going on would have been sufficient in order to retain his playing time. We also understand that these issues can arise on short notice. Speaking with a head coach before a game will solve this issue. This communication must come from the player. Again, we are teaching responsibility and character. Also refer to the JPA contract that your son signed before participating in Journeyman games.

Q: Where are Journeyman events and practices held?
A: Tuesdays and Thursdays are at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Hampton Falls Road in Exeter. This is a donated facility. All other days we meet at a variety of SAU16 schools such as the Stratham Cooperative Middle School, Lincoln Street School and the Exeter High School. Other locations are used as a back-up location such as the Rockingham Athletic Club and other locations within a 15 mile radius of the bandstand in the Center of Exeter.
